Academician

An elected member of the Royal Academy of Arts, the institution founded in London in 1768 to promote the visual arts. Royal Academicians are distinguished artists or architects elected by their fellow Academicians, and may use the post-nominal letters RA. from its inception, election to the Academy was a significant mark of professional standing in British art. The number of Academicians is limited, and the institution continues to elect members today.
