A London-based financial representative acting on behalf of British Army officers and regiments. During the nineteenth century agents administered regimental pay, arranged supplies, handled officers’ banking, and managed payments connected with the purchase and sale of commissions. Their importance declined after the abolition of commission purchase in 1871.
