Board of Guardians
editA local body responsible for administering poor relief. Boards of Guardians existed in some forms before 1834, notably in unions established under Gilbert’s Act 1782. The Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 established Boards of Guardians as the standard governing bodies of Poor Law Unions, responsible for workhouses and poor relief. They continued until 1930, when their functions passed to local authorities.
