Commissioners of Assize

edit

By John Simpson •

Judges appointed by the Crown to travel on circuit and hold assizes in England and Wales. Usually senior judges, they tried serious criminal cases and certain civil cases under commissions authorising them to exercise the Crown’s judicial authority. The Courts Act 1971 abolished the assize system, which was replaced by the Crown Court in 1972.
