consistory court

An ecclesiastical court of the Church of England, with each diocese having its own court presided over by a Chancellor. Historically it dealt with matters including church property, clergy discipline, marriage, and probate. During the nineteenth century its jurisdiction was reduced by reforms transferring divorce and probate matters to secular courts, but it retained important responsibilities, particularly concerning church buildings and clergy conduct.
