Court of Arches

The principal ecclesiastical appeal court for the Province of Canterbury. Presided over by the Dean of the Arches, it hears appeals from diocesan consistory courts and certain original cases. Its origins are medieval, but during the nineteenth century it remained an important part of Church of England governance, particularly in disputes over church law, property, ritual, and clerical discipline.
