Court of Chancery

edit

By John Simpson •

An English court administering equity, providing remedies where common law was inadequate. Presided over by the Lord Chancellor, it dealt particularly with trusts, property, inheritance, and disputes requiring injunctions or specific performance. The Judicature Acts of 1873–75 abolished it as a separate court, transferring its jurisdiction to the Chancery Division of the High Court.
