deacon

A member of the Christian clergy ordained to the diaconate, serving in worship and pastoral work. In the Church of England, a deacon may preach, baptise, and assist at Holy Communion, but cannot preside at the Eucharist or ordinarily pronounce the absolution. Ordination as deacon is normally the first stage towards priesthood. A deacon can serve as a curate but cannot hold a benefice.
