Disestablishment

edit

By John Simpson •

The removal of a church’s status as the officially established church of a state, ending its formal constitutional relationship with government. In Britain, the Church of Ireland was disestablished in 1871 and the Church in Wales in 1920. Disestablishment does not necessarily entail disendowment, the removal of church property or revenues, although the two measures may be combined.
