Doctors’ Commons

A society of lawyers specialising in civil and canon law, and the buildings in London where they practised. Members were qualified advocates who appeared principally in ecclesiastical and Admiralty courts. During the nineteenth century Doctors’ Commons was associated particularly with probate, marriage, divorce, ecclesiastical and maritime law, and was increasingly regarded as old-fashioned. Its functions were reduced by legal reforms in the mid nineteenth century, and the society eventually disappeared.
