Friendly Isles

edit

By John Simpson •

A historical European name for Tonga, an island group in the south-west Pacific. Captain James Cook popularised the name following visits in 1773 and 1777, when he received an apparently friendly welcome. Widely used in nineteenth-century accounts, the name gradually gave way to Tonga, which became a unified kingdom under George Tupou I. It survives chiefly in historical contexts.
