house surgeon
editA resident junior doctor appointed to a hospital surgical post, responsible for the day-to-day care of surgical patients and assisting senior surgeons. The term was common in British hospitals in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when such posts provided practical clinical training. It remains in use in some countries and occasionally in British hospitals, but in modern Britain has largely been superseded by formal training grades and titles.
