By John Simpson

The widespread uprising of 1857–9 against East India Company rule, also known as the Indian Mutiny or First War of Independence. Beginning among Indian soldiers (sepoys) at Meerut in May 1857, it spread across northern and central India before being suppressed by British and loyal Indian forces. In 1858, Company rule ended and government of India passed to the Crown.
