King’s Scholar

A pupil or student supported by a foundation established by a monarch. At Eton College, King’s Scholars, founded by Henry VI in 1440, are selected by competitive examination and traditionally board in College; they are also known as Collegers. The term has also been used at other institutions, including King’s College, Cambridge, for students supported by royal or college foundations.
