Liberal Unionists

edit

By John Simpson •

Liberals who, from 1886, opposed William Ewart Gladstone’s proposals for Irish Home Rule and supported maintaining the Union between Great Britain and Ireland. Led principally by Lord Hartington and Joseph Chamberlain, they formed a distinct political grouping and increasingly cooperated with the Conservatives. They were an important component of Unionist governments after 1895 and formally merged with the Conservative Party in 1912.
