The official or minister responsible for a country’s postal service, a title used in Britain and several other countries. In Britain the first Postmaster General was appointed in 1657 and the office became a major government post as postal communications expanded. The Postmaster General also oversaw inland telegraphs from 1870 and telephones from 1912. The British office was abolished in 1969, when the Post Office became a public corporation.
