A part-time judge appointed to a particular city, borough, or other area. Recorders today sit in the Crown Court or County Court and are paid by the day. Historically, the office was associated with local government, the recorder being appointed by a mayor and aldermen to advise on legal matters and preserve the record of proceedings. The office was regulated by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 and subsequently developed into its modern judicial role.
