Royal Society of British Artists

An artists’ society founded in 1823 as the Society of British Artists, providing an alternative to the Royal Academy. Its galleries Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, became an important London exhibition venue. It received a Royal Charter in 1847 and the prefix Royal in 1887. Members have included James McNeill Whistler, Walter Sickert, L. S. Lowry, and Henry Moore. The Society continues today.
