Union Club

edit

By John Simpson •

A London gentlemen’s club founded about 1800, in connection with the union of Great Britain and Ireland. It was a general social and professional club rather than a party-political organisation, attracting politicians, lawyers, merchants, and other prominent men. In 1824 it moved into a purpose-built clubhouse at the south-west corner of Trafalgar Square, designed by Sir Robert Smirke. The club closed in 1964.
