workhouse

edit

By John Simpson •

An institution providing accommodation and basic support for people unable to maintain themselves, in return for work. Under the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, workhouses became the principal means of administering poor relief through Poor Law Unions. Conditions were deliberately austere to discourage dependence on public relief. Workhouses remained in use until the development of the modern welfare system in the twentieth century.
