An accoucheur is a male midwife. As the science of obstetrics developed throughout the nineteenth century the term “accoucheur” was gradually superseded in English by “obstetrician”, originally in the sense of a man-midwife, but subsequently as a surgeon (male or female) who specialises in obstetrics or the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the period immediately following this.
