Membership

Current members are encouraged to nominate individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines.

The Club has an upper limit of 2,000 members. Prospective members must be proposed and seconded by existing members to begin the membership process.

The Club warmly welcomes new generations of members and is keen to offer a place where beautiful surroundings, quiet discussions, and lively social events keep nurturing the stimulating intellectual life offered by the community.

Member facilities

The Clubhouse is open on Monday to Friday from 7am to 12 midnight. A Hall Porter is on duty 24 hours a day for assistance, except at Easter and over the Christmas and New Year period when the Club is closed.

The various rooms in the Club provide convenient spaces for discussion, reading and research. Coffee and light snacks are served in the Drawing Room and in several other rooms; lunches and dinners are served in the Coffee Room, and drinks can be obtained at the bar.

Pre- and post-theatre suppers are available from 6pm until midnight.

Rooms may be booked for private parties and meetings with available capacities ranging from ten to 150 people. Fifteen bedrooms are available for members to reserve and receive room service.

The Club’s book collection may be found in the South Library and other library rooms (each with different subject matter specialisms).

Members are welcome to use laptops and mobile devices in the library and reading rooms, provided these are set to silent. A number of desktop computers are also available for use in some library rooms.

"It’s never the same place twice, it has eternal qualities. There’s a sense of humour everywhere."

Joining the Club

Suitability for membership is judged by reference to the objectives of the Club as an association of persons of attainment in any field where their work is of an intellectual nature of substantial value to the community (and, in the case of younger candidates, promise as well as attainment).

The Club is particularly keen to encourage nominations of individuals from a wide and diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines as well as younger candidates who demonstrate potential for future attainment.
