half pay

A reduced rate of pay formerly given to commissioned officers of the British armed forces who were not actively serving but remained liable to recall. During the nineteenth century it provided a form of reserve status and could also be taken voluntarily, sometimes by wealthy officers wishing to avoid active or overseas service. Less effective officers could also be placed on half pay as an alternative to more formal disciplinary measures.
