High Court of Admiralty

A London court exercising jurisdiction over maritime affairs, including piracy, prize, salvage, and collisions, using principles derived largely from civil law. During the nineteenth century its jurisdiction was progressively reorganised: its criminal business passed to the Central Criminal Court in 1834, while its remaining civil jurisdiction was incorporated into the High Court’s Probate, Divorce, and Admiralty Division in 1875.
