King’s Counsel

A senior lawyer appointed as one of His Majesty’s Counsellors learned in the law. The title, abbreviated KC , is awarded to experienced advocates following an application and assessment process. The appointment traditionally indicates ability to undertake complex and important cases, usually with the assistance of a junior barrister. Since the seventeenth century, holders have worn a silk gown, giving rise to the phrase “to take silk”.
