materia medica

A historical term for medicinal substances and preparations, and the study of their properties and therapeutic uses. Widely used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the discipline was a precursor of modern pharmacology. The expression derives from De Materia Medica, a first-century work by the Greek physician Dioscorides. It survives chiefly in historical and traditional medical contexts.
