A full-time, salaried magistrate who sat in a police court, dealing with criminal cases through summary decisions or preliminary hearings before cases were sent to a higher court. The term was particularly associated with London during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including the famous Bow Street Magistrates’ Court. During the twentieth century, the designation was largely replaced by “stipendiary magistrate”, meaning a paid, full-time magistrate.
