primogeniture

A system of inheritance in which property or titles pass exclusively through the senior male line, normally to the eldest son. In nineteenth-century England, male primogeniture was widely associated with the landed aristocracy and gentry and helped preserve estates intact across generations. Younger sons were consequently often expected to enter the professions, the Church, the military, or public service, while daughters might depend upon marriage. The system was modified by twentieth-century reforms.
