Rule 2

A rule of the Athenaeum Club allowing the Committee to elect, without ballot, a limited number of people distinguished in science, literature, the arts, or public service. Introduced in 1830, it reflected the Club’s founding purpose of bringing eminent figures into its membership. From 1848, public service was expressly included among the qualifications. Other members were elected by ballot. The provision is now effectively covered by the Club’s Rule 4.
