X Club

A London dining club of nine leading Victorian scientists, founded in 1864 by Thomas Henry Huxley to promote science and liberal intellectual values. Its members supported Darwinism, scientific education, and greater public recognition of science. All belonged to the Athenaeum, and most were Fellows of the Royal Society. Three members successively served as its President between 1873 and 1895.
