zillah

An administrative district in British India, forming a subdivision of a larger province or other territorial division. During the nineteenth century, each zillah generally had its own administrative and judicial arrangements. Zillah courts dealt with local civil and criminal cases, with separate European and Native courts in some periods. Proceedings in Native courts were conducted in the local language, and their jurisdiction generally extended to cases of lesser value than those heard by European courts.
