Royal Academy Schools

The art school of the Royal Academy of Arts, established in London in 1769 to provide professional training for artists. Instruction included drawing, painting, sculpture, and study from the antique and the human figure. During the nineteenth century, the Schools were an important part of the training system for British artists, with admission by competition and students taught by leading Academicians. The Schools continue to operate today, providing postgraduate training in contemporary art.
