Domestic Chaplain

A chaplain employed by a private individual or household, usually to provide religious services and pastoral care to the family and its dependants. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, wealthy aristocratic and landed households sometimes maintained domestic chaplains as part of their household establishments. The position could provide a young clergyman with income, accommodation, and useful connections while awaiting or seeking a permanent ecclesiastical appointment.
