Papal Aggression crisis

A British political and religious controversy following Pope Pius IX’s restoration of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in England in 1850. The creation of Catholic dioceses with territorial titles provoked Protestant opposition, leading to the Ecclesiastical Titles Act 1851, which restricted their use. The controversy exposed divisions within institutions including the Athenaeum, whose members disagreed over the government’s response.
