Archdeacon

A senior Church of England clergyman responsible for assisting a bishop in the administration and pastoral oversight of an archdeaconry, a subdivision of a diocese containing several parishes. Archdeacons traditionally have particular responsibilities for clergy discipline, church buildings, and the implementation of diocesan policy. The office is an ancient one, but became increasingly important as the Church of England’s diocesan and parish administration developed.
