In the Church of England, a parish incumbent historically entitled to the great tithes, unlike a vicar, who generally received the lesser tithes. The distinction became largely historical following the Tithe Commutation Act 1836 and subsequent reforms, but both titles remain in use. In universities and colleges, a rector is a head or senior officer whose responsibilities vary between institutions.
