Visitation

In the Church of England, a formal inspection of the clergy, churches, and religious administration of a diocese or archdeaconry, traditionally conducted by a bishop or archdeacon. Visitations enabled church authorities to examine the condition of church buildings, clergy conduct, and parish administration, and to issue directions or require corrections. In the nineteenth century, visitations remained an important means of diocesan oversight, although their administrative and disciplinary functions have since changed.
