East India Company

edit

By John Simpson

A joint-stock company founded in 1600 to trade with Asia. It established trading posts across Asia but increasingly concentrated on India, where it acquired extensive territories and developed its own army and administration. By the nineteenth century it governed much of India. Following the Indian Rebellion of 1857, its governing powers passed to the Crown in 1858. The Company was dissolved in 1874.
