Chiltern Hundreds

A nominal Crown office used to enable Members of Parliament to resign, since MPs cannot simply relinquish their seats. Appointment as Steward and Bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds, in Buckinghamshire, disqualifies an MP from sitting in the Commons. Established as a resignation device in the eighteenth century, the procedure remains in use, alongside appointment to the Manor of Northstead.
