Whig

A member or supporter of a British political tradition favouring parliamentary authority, religious toleration, and constitutional reform. In the nineteenth century, Whigs formed a principal parliamentary grouping alongside the Tories. During the 1850s, they increasingly allied with Radicals and Peelites, helping establish the Liberal Party in 1859. The term survived as a description of the older political tradition.
