royal licence

Formal permission granted by the Sovereign, usually on ministerial advice. In nineteenth- and twentieth-century Britain, a Royal Licence commonly authorised assumption or change of surname, particularly as a condition of inheritance. Such changes were normally published in the London Gazette. Royal Licences could also concern grants of arms and other matters requiring royal authority.
