Privy Council

A formal body of advisers to the British Sovereign, historically including senior politicians, judges, and bishops. By the nineteenth century, executive power had largely passed to the Cabinet, but membership remained prestigious, conferring the style Right Honourable. The Council retains constitutional functions, including approving Orders in Council and royal charters. Its Judicial Committee also hears certain appeals.
