Royal Society

Britain’s leading learned scientific society, founded in 1660 and granted a Royal Charter in 1662. Its Fellowship originally included scientists and prominent patrons of science. Nineteenth-century concern that social standing sometimes outweighed scientific achievement led to reforms, notably in 1847, strengthening election on scientific merit. The Society remains the UK’s national academy of sciences, with about 1,900 Fellows.
