Royal Society of Edinburgh

A learned society founded in Edinburgh in 1783 during the Scottish Enlightenment to promote learning and useful knowledge. Its distinguished Fellowship included Adam Smith, Joseph Black, and James Hutton, and it became a major centre of Scottish intellectual life. The Society is located at 22–6 George Street, Edinburgh, and is Scotland’s National Academy.
