University Reform

The nineteenth-century movement to modernise British universities, particularly Oxford and Cambridge, whose governance, curricula, fellowships, and religious requirements still reflected their medieval origins. Royal Commissions investigated both universities in the 1850s, leading to legislation and revised statutes. The Oxford University Act 1854 was a major milestone; subsequent reforms broadened curricula and access, modernised academic organisation, and progressively removed religious tests.
