Select Preacher

At Oxford University, a person appointed or “selected” to preach before the University on a specified occasion. The distinction was usually conferred on a clergyman or scholar chosen by the University or a college and was particularly associated with the University Sermons. Several categories of Select Preacher existed, connected with particular foundations or occasions, and forms of the appointment continue today.
