Crimea

A peninsula in the northern Black Sea, internationally recognised as part of Ukraine but occupied and controlled by Russia since 2014. Part of the Russian Empire during the nineteenth century, it was the principal theatre of the Crimean War (1853–56), including the siege of Sevastopol. Historically called ‘the Crimea’ in British English, it is now generally called simply ‘Crimea’.
