Test Acts
editEnglish statutes imposing religious tests for public office and certain university positions. The Test Act 1673 required officeholders to receive Anglican communion, excluding Roman Catholics and many Protestant Dissenters. Most religious tests for public office were repealed in 1828. University restrictions were progressively relaxed, notably at Oxford in 1854 and Cambridge in 1856, with most remaining tests abolished in 1871.
