By John Simpson •

The principal territorial administrations of the East India Company, notably Bengal, Madras, and Bombay, each headed by a Governor. Penang became a fourth Presidency in 1805, but lost that status in 1830. The Presidencies continued under the Crown after 1858, though their boundaries and administrative status changed. They were progressively replaced by provincial administration during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
