Residence in a particular place, or the period or status associated with it. In medicine, especially in North America, residency denotes postgraduate clinical training, usually in a hospital, leading towards specialist practice. In British India, a Residency was the official residence and establishment of a British Resident, who represented the government in its relations with an Indian princely state.
